Description

George Washington: Three Silk Ribbons. Three fine early silk ribbons. One example is made for the Washington Benevolent Society which is among the first grass-roots Federalist political groups. Founded in 1808, they became widespread after the anti-Madison "Peace Conventions" in 1812. Members were issued these ribbon badges which were worn in processions. As such, they are the earliest known American political ribbons. This item with an attractive open-looped weave border, is accompanied by two examples made for the Centennial celebration marking the birth of George Washington.

Condition: The three approximately 8" tall examples have typical light wear and expected age but are generally in very good condition with nice sheen.
