Description
Douglas & Johnson: A Supreme Campaign Ribbon Rarity, the Key to this Iconic 1860 Set. Of Lincoln's three opponents in that landmark election, the "Little Giant" Stephen Douglas remains the most familiar, perhaps due in part to the legendary Lincoln-Douglas debates during the 1858 Illinois senatorial election (Douglas would best Lincoln in that race, but Lincoln would claim the larger political prize two years later). Of the four 1860 tickets, Douglas & Johnson came in second to Lincoln & Hamlin. The Electoral College was a different story, however. Douglas tended to have appeal in the same states as Lincoln- but to a lesser degree. Bell had a following in the Border States, and Breckinridge in the Deep South. As a result, Douglas won only 12 electoral votes as compared to Lincoln's 180, Breckinridge's 72, and Bell's 39.Of the four 1860 Brady jugate ribbons, the Douglas & Johnson has always been of profound rarity. The present example, along with the accompanying three ribbons, came out of the amazing collection of a hitherto unknown California hobbyist in the mid-1970s. Until recent years it was considered the only known example. Two others have surfaced, both of which were discreetly sold privately to major collectors for prices reportedly approaching $20,000. This is the first appearance at auction.
All four of the ribbons in the set offered here are in beautiful condition, but this one is the best- absolutely mint condition. An opportunity which may not come along again for years, if ever, for sophisticated collectors. From the Merrill C. Berman Collection.
