Description

Cass & Butler: Pewter-Rim Medallion. The losing Democrats in the election of 1848, Lewis Cass and William Orlando Butler, are shown on either side of this 2 1/2" badge. The hand-colored lithographed portraits were published by Nathaniel Currier. Besides a missing loop and a fine lateral crack in the glass on the Cass side which detracts minimally, it is in excellent condition. As a general rule, Cass material is very hard to come by and the Cass pewter-rim is especially elusive and desirable. Cass served in the Cabinets of Andrew Jackson and James Buchanan, so was no stranger to the White House.
