Description

Anti-Frémont: Iconic Black Republican Ribbon. One of perhaps a half-dozen known examples, it is one of the most sought-after American political ribbons. Opponents of the first Republican presidential candidate widely employed scare tactics or race-baiting, declaring that Frémont's election would encourage slaves to leave their masters and head north. The woodcut of the runaway slave was most often associated with the so-called "Black Republican" party. Also featured is a skull and crossbones and the names "Fremont And Dayton" in bold text. This example measures approximately 2 3/8" x 6" and is a pale yellow. Some minor loss at top, bottom, and right edges with very minor staining. There is faint creasing throughout. Overall, this ribbon is in good condition with bold graphics and text. No minimum bid. From the J.Doyle Dewitt Collection.
