Description
Abraham Lincoln: A Unique and Important 1860 "Coat-tail" Campaign Ribbon from Illinois. It also touts Richard Oglesby, who was elected to his first of three terms as governor that year. He is best remembered for having dubbed Lincoln the "Rail Splitter," a nickname whose theme appeared on so many familiar 1860 campaign items. However, to our knowledge, this is the first appearance of this unlisted ribbon. Great condition. Length 8.125".It is sold with a typical Lincoln campaign badge with beautiful bearded ferro because the two were found together and presumably belonged to the same Lincoln supporter (although it is obviously an artifact of the 1864 re-election campaign). There is wear to the nearly-separated flag-ribbon which has a tape repair on verso. A prize for the serious specialist in Lincoln or Illinois political items.
From the collection of Robert and Julie Sterling.
