White House Furniture: Pair of Music Room Chairs. Pair of Duncan Phyfe-style lyre-back mahogany chairs, each 34" high. Each has a paper label under the seat that reads: "Tell City Chairs. Pattern 4517. Mahogany 27". There is also a brass plaque attached to one of the corner braces that is inscribed: "The White House MR 316 2-60". The "2-60" indicates the time the chairs were placed into service. The seat was recovered by designer Oleg Cassini when Jackie Kennedy hired him to assist with redecorating the White House, but the original upholstery was not removed and is still in place. This set of chairs was acquired by White House Staff Photographer George Szabo who worked at the White House from 1956 to 1980. He relates that these "... were all that was left after Jackie and family left the White House." We are also selling a set of dining rooms chairs and a pie-crust table from the Szabo Collection. The lot is accompanied by an assortment of research and provenance material, including three notarized statements and a copy of Szabo's White House photo i.d.
