Description

Thomas Jefferson: Plain Divider Technical Drawing Instrument. Akin to a basic compass, the plain divider tool is comprised of two needles attached at a hinge. This widely used tool was used to divide drawn spaces into equal parts, to transfer distances and to copy drawings in an action called "stepping." The plain divider here is 3" long and comprised of steel. As only one type of metal was used to craft this tool, some corrosion persists beneath the frets on either side of the joint. Nonetheless, both needles are sharp and delicate, coming together to form a single, perfect point. As such, the tool retains the same precision and functionality enjoyed by its one-time owner, Thomas Jefferson.
