Description
Painting "Rue de l'Eau" by Mars Schmit, Benefiting Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. The oil painting on canvas depicts the old section of Luxembourg City with spires of Our Lady of Luxembourg Cathedral in the background. Signed and dated 1963 in the lower left corner, the painting measures 32-inches by 24-inches. It is framed to an overall size of 38-inches by 31.5-inches. A typed note on the back confirms that the painting was purchased by then Vice President Johnson on a visit to Luxembourg in early November 1963. Mars Schmit (1931-1990) was a well-known and accomplished artist from Luxembourg City. This lot will be accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by Lynda Johnson Robb.A full 100% of the net proceeds will benefit the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at the University of Texas at Austin, in honor of the 2012 Centennial of Lady Bird Johnson's birth.
