Mary Todd Lincoln: Personally-owned Silver Cake Server. 9 1/4" sterling silver cake server that belonged to First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln. It has her initials, "ML" on the back of the handle. The front has engraved designs and a classical bust at the top. It was made by Starr & Marcus and has a partial patent date of "186-". It is accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from Thomas Welles Brainard, a descendent of Gideon Welles, testifying that it "was given to Mary Jane Welles, wife of Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy, by Mrs. Lincoln." This may have been used by the First Lady to serve the President a slice of his favorite almond cake!

This item was retailed by Starr & Marcus, but produced by Gorham in 1864 and is called the Medallion pattern. Mrs. Lincoln also ordered many pieces in the Josephine pattern for use at the White House.
