Mary Surratt: Relics and Ephemera. Group of items related to the assassination conspirator Mary Surratt, the first woman in U. S. history to be executed by authorities of the Federal government. It includes a small plastic packet with approximately 12 strands of her hair, likely removed after her hanging and originally accompanied by the diary of Samuel Curtis, a member of the 8th Regiment that stood guard at the execution. Together with a 3" x 2" manuscript pass to the hanging signed by Winfield Scott Hancock, issued to Major General Hartranft (with caption card identifying it), a relic piece of wood and linen on a caption card that reads "A bit of the scaffold on which the Lincoln Conspirators were hanged July 7, 1865 and a piece of the bandage which tied Mrs. Surratt's arms at that time" plus an 8" x 10 ½" salt print of Father Francis E. Boyle, pastor of St. Peter's in Washington, a character witness for Mary Surratt who also attended Henry Wirz prior to his execution.
