Description
Jefferson Davis: Personally-Used Tobacco Box. 4" x 4" x 3.5" wooden tobacco box comprised on a bottom and a lid. The wood might be walnut. The bottom is assembled using nails and is inscribed "Virginia" on one side. The separate lid has painted decoration on the top depicting crossed cannons, crossed 11-star First National flags, a bale of cotton and a riband inscribed "Richmond". A paper label is glued to the underside of the lid. It reads: "This is the tobacco box used by Jeff Davis during the war and was given to my aunt Mrs. F. M. G. Pender by a friend in New York City - a Mrs. Daly This box and his office door plate were given Mrs. Daly when she was in Richmond soon after the war on a bridal visit, her husband being a Southern man, they were given as bridal gifts. My aunt sold the door plate and brought this box to me. Fannie C. Riddick." Given the rather naive decoration, we surmise the box was painted by one of the Davis children, or perhaps a servant. There are no hinges or evidence that any ever existed. The lid is slightly larger than the base. We assume there was once a slab of wood affixed to the underside and that the lid neatly fitted into the base. This slab of wood was likely removed and the label put in its place.Auction Info
