Description
A gift from President Lincoln.
James K. Polk: White House Dessert Plate. 9" dessert plate from the White House service ordered by President James K. Polk in 1846. A similar example is pictured on page 69 (illustration #21) of Klapthor's "Official White House China". It was made by Edouard Honoré of No. 6 Rue Bon Femme Poisonnierre in Paris. The American shield has 27 stars and the center is decorated with yellow roses. The back of the plate has an attached note indicating it was given by President Abraham Lincoln to George Edward Gambrill, an employee of the Post Office Department. It is known that Lincoln did hand out pieces of the old White House dinner service as a new service with different design had been ordered by Mrs. Lincoln. This example is in great shape with only slight, normal wear to the gilding, loss to two of the outer edge bumps and two shallow chips on the underside of two others, not visible from the front. Also, a teensy chip on the underside rim. It should appeal not only to collectors of White House china, but Texas collectors, as well. Polk advocated and oversaw the annexation of Texas. Our hometown, Dallas, was named after his vice president. The central design is a yellow rose [of Texas]. The Lincoln connection doesn't hurt, either.Auction Info
