Description

Harry S. Truman: Presentation Wristwatch from Texas Campaign Visit. Baylor "President" wristwatch with grey leather strap and slightly domed crystal, in the Art Deco style, inscribed on the back plate: "Pres. Harry Truman/ Visit/ San Antonio/ Texas/ 9-26-48". Excellent condition (though not currently running), perhaps worn just a few times. In the election of 1948, Truman conducted his famous "Whistle Stop" campaign which resulted in his upset defeat of odds-on favorite Thomas E. Dewey. He visited San Antonio on September 26th and toured the Old Governor's Palace and the Alamo. That night, he gave a dinner speech before guests that included Governor Beauford Jester, Mayor Alfred Callaghan and Congressman Sam Rayburn. In his speech, Truman addressed Sam Rayburn and pointed out that Rayburn was a "hard-shell Baptist" and Truman was a "light-foot Baptist" but, given that he was speaking on the Sabbath, he couldn't explain the difference, but could do so on any other day. This wristwatch was no doubt presented to Truman at this time, as a memento of his visit. Provenance: Doyle's Jewelry Sale, February 25, 2014, lot #564. From the Estate of Margaret Truman Daniel.
