Description
George Washington: Substantial Lock of his Hair. Attractive display that includes a lock of Washington's hair, tied-together and displayed under glass (approximately 40-50 strands each 7" in length), together with an oval Wedgwood-style Jasper ware plaque with profile of Washington facing left. It is accompanied by written provenance, as follows: 1) 4-page letter written on bifolium writing paper, Baltimore, Maryland, April 27, 1876, from Ellen M. Jackson to Mr. W. Kenmore Jewett ("... With regard to General Washington's hair I think I can satisfy your son that it is part of the original lock sent by Mrs. Washington (not Col. W.) to my grandfather Judge [Samuel] Chase. I remember that many years ago (at least 60) my mother gave Mrs. Oldfield... a piece of that same lock of hair... I think that the only other person to whom any was given was Dr. Thom H. Buckler of this city. Your son and our immediate family have the rest." 2) transmittal envelope from Jackson to William Jewett that originally contained some Continental currency (no longer present). 3) a late 19th century envelope that was used to house the lock of hair. Samuel Chase was a member of the Continental Congress, signer of the Declaration of Independence, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Maryland, and associate justice of the United States Supreme Court (1796-1811), appointed by President Washington. The lock of hair was likely removed at the time of Washington's death and given by his widow to close family members and friends.Auction Info
