Description
George Washington: Signed Military Discharge. One partially printed page, 8" x 13"; "Head-Quarters" [Newburgh, New York]; June 7, 1783. A document discharging a soldier from the Continental Army, signed at the conclusion, "G: Washington" as Commander of the Continental Army. The document reads, in part:"By His Excellency George Washington, Esq; General and Commander in Chief of the Forces of the United States of America. These are to Certify that the Bearer hereof Daniel Mulliken, Serjeant in the Sixth Massachusetts Regiment, having faithfully served the United States Six Years, two months and Seven Days, and being inlisted for the War only, is hereby Discharged from the American Army..."
Countersigned by Anselm Tupper as the regimental adjutant and Jonathan Trumbull Jr., one of Washington's aides-de-camp and secretary who would go on to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate, and as governor of Connecticut. Framed to an overall size of 15" x 20".
On April 19, 1783, from his headquarters at Newburgh, General Washington ordered the cessation of hostilities from Newburgh, formally ending combat operations following Cornwallis's surrender at Yorktown eighteen months earlier. The Newburgh encampment was also the site of several pivotal moments in early American history, including Washington's suppression of the Newburgh Conspiracy, his reputed rejection of proposals to assume kingship, the creation of the Badge of Military Merit (the precursor to the Purple Heart), and the drafting of his influential Circular Letter to the States, which helped shape the future Constitution.
Includes a Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA.
Condition: Not examined out of frame. Light toning and flattened folds; a few small separations or minor instances of loss at the fold lines, not affecting text. Light, scattered foxing or staining.
