Description

Franklin Roosevelt: Personal Presidential Flag. Used during World War II. This design was adopted in 1916 at the order of Woodrow Wilson, and incorporates the eagle from the presidential seal on a deep blue field, with a white star in each corner. The flag itself is made of wool, with the design elements carefully embroidered. The original tag reads" Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot / inspected by (name) / 6-17-42," insuring that this is an official presidential flag and not a commercial copy. Its relatively small size, 28" x 18", suggests that it may have been displayed in the president's office or possibly flown on a vehicle in which he rode. This style flag remained in use through 1945, when President Truman ordered an extensive redesign.

Condition is superb. the colors are rich and unfaded, with only a hint of light age browning on the red, white, and blue shield. Several tiny barely detectable moth holes are noted for strictest accuracy. An historic presidential artifact with great display appeal, formerly in the renowned FDR collection of Drs. Joseph J. and Deborah M. Plaud.
