Description

Franklin D. Roosevelt: Personally-Owned Stetson Hat. Brown hat, size "1/4", made by John B. Stetson Company of New York and Philadelphia. It is a "Selv-Edge" model. The leather sweatband is stamped: "Franklin D. Roosevelt". It is in mint condition and is housed in an old, if not original, Stetson hat box. The hat was given to Richard T. "Dick" Tracy, a White House employee, by FDR as a token of appreciation for his unfailing service. Tracy began work at the White House in 1926, during the Coolidge Administration, serving as a "footman". He graduated to chauffeur in 1933. First Lady Lou Henry Hoover wrote a glowing letter of recommendation for him on March 1, 1933, which no doubt aided in his retention. He retired in 1964, having served under seven presidents. The lot is accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity and Provenance signed by his grandson, Richard T. Muffler, himself a third-generation White House employee.
