Description

Franklin D. Roosevelt: Personally-Owned Pocket Watch. We believe this watch was likely a wedding gift to FDR. It is a quarter-hour repeater in a 55 mm. diameter hunter's case. The manufacturer is Audemars Freres of Geneva. The serial number is 139601. The case, though not stamped, is likely 14 or 18K gold. The front cover has the monogram FDR at the bottom and the case holds a cut-out photograph of Eleanor Roosevelt. The watch runs and chimes, although the chiming sequence may need adjustment. The watch is circa 1890-1910 which coincides with the period in which Franklin and Eleanor were married. The watch was sold by Sotheby's as lot #172 in their October 26, 1988 sale of "Fine Printed and Manuscript Americana." The consignor, as stated in the catalog, was James Roosevelt, eldest son of FDR.
