Dwight D. Eisenhower: V-E Day Gold Cigarette Case. V-E day occurred on May 7, 1945 in Reims, France. The instrument of surrender was signed by German General Alfred Jodl and American General Walter Bedell Smith, representing Allied Supreme Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower. French and Russian representatives signed as witnesses. We are offering an 18K gold cigarette case which we believe was given to Ike by grateful citizens of France, commemorating the end of German occupation and the war in Europe. It was part of lot 173 in Sotheby's September 24, 2015 sale of "Property Formerly From the Collection of President and Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower". It measures 4" x 3.25" and has a basketweave design on the covers. The thumbpiece is set with a cabochon synthetic sapphire. The interior is engraved "Dwight D. Eisenhower, Reims, France, 1945". Three French assay stamps appear in the interior corners. The hinge opens smoothly, but the clasp does not hold the case closed. It weighs 156 grams. There are minor scratches and discoloration, commensurate with use and age. Generally in good condition. A superb relic associated with one of the most important dates in modern world history.Auction Info
