Description

Dwight D. Eisenhower: Personally-owned Stetson Hat. Size 7 1/4" beige Stetson hat that belonged to Dwight Eisenhower. The silk liner reads: "Shady Oak Farm Ft. Worth Texas Where the West Begins. The latch string always hangs out. Amon Carter". The leather sweatband has gold-stamped lettering reading: "Dwight D. Eisenhower", "Washer Bros. Ft. Worth", "The Open Road XXXXXXX Stetson" and the Stetson logo marked "Clear Beaver Quality Long Oval." Carter had all his gift hats marked "Shady Oak". We include a letter of provenance from 2002 from the dealer who obtained it from the estate of Richard and Betty McCully. McCully was a Secret Service Agent who worked for five Presidents from 1951-1976. He guarded the Eisenhower grandchildren, former President Eisenhower from 1966 to 1969 and Mamie Eisenhower after the General's death. The hat was given to Eisenhower by Amon Carter and was subsequently given to agent McCully by Eisenhower himself. We include a copy of a 1953 Amon Carter letter to Ike indicating that a "special hat" was being made up for the President. The hat is generally in excellent condition. We note two light abrasions on the top crease which corresponds to a sweat stain on the interior liner. A Stetson hat box (incomplete) which may be the original, is included.
