Dwight D. Eisenhower: Painting Showing Camp David. 20" x 16" oil on canvas depicting a wooded scene at Camp David, the Presidential retreat located at Catoctin Mountain Park in northern Maryland. It is signed in the lower right corner "D D E" and is framed to an overall size of 23.5" x 19.5". It is inscribed on the back of the stretcher "To George R. Bechatel from Sue Eisenhower granddaughter of Pres. DDE 8-15-68". Camp David was originally built by the WPA, opening in 1938 as "Hi-Catoctin". FDR renamed it "Shangri-La" in 1942, using it for state and presidential visits. It was renamed by President Eisenhower in 1953 as "Camp David", named after his father and grandson. It hosted many heads-of-state, including Winston Churchill in 1943 and Nikita Khrushchev in 1959. Like Churchill, Eisenhower was an amateur painter who found relaxation in the pursuit, as well as a break from the pressures of office.Condition: There is an 1.25" shallow vertical cut in the canvas, located in the center, about 2/3's the way up. It does not breech the underlying canvas. It does not affect the integrity of the canvas and is not something at all noticeable unless one is directed towards it. We mention it strictly for the sake of accuracy. Overall, the condition is outstanding.
