Description
Dwight D. Eisenhower: Oils on Canvas. There are three components to this lot. The first is a 16" x 12" oil on canvas depicting a covered bridge, signed "D D E 59" in the lower right corner. Ike's hobbies included golf and painting. Though not a gifted artist by any means, his works have found favor with collectors who cherish the personal connection with one of our most popular presidents. This particular painting was given by Ike to close friend and confidante George E. Allen, advisor to FDR, Truman and Eisenhower and author of "Presidents Who Have Known Me" in 1950. He is perhaps more famous as the football coach of a Cumberland [TN] College team that lost 222-0 to John Heisman-coached Georgia Tech in 1916, a record that will never be broken. The second item is a 14" x 18" oil on canvas portrait of Allen signed "D E" in the lower right corner. The last item is a 17" x 11.5" limited edition leather-bound book [805/1500] titled The Eisenhower College Collection/ The Paintings of Dwight D. Eisenhower presented to George Allen just prior to his 1973 death. The covered bridge painting appears as plate no. 15 in this work.Auction Info
