Description
Abraham Lincoln: White House China Plate. 7 1/4" salad plate in the Solferino pattern, used in the Lincoln White House. These were ordered by Mrs. Lincoln from E. V. Haughwout & Company of New York during her May 1861 buying trip. It has been broken in four pieces and glued back together. There is one chip in the 2 o'clock position, two rim hairlines, a shallow chip on the underside rim, roughness and chipping to the raised base, as well as some wear to the decoration. There are no markings on the back, in keeping with the pieces used during the Lincoln and Johnson administrations. It can safely be said that this plate was used in the Lincoln White House. It is accompanied by a 1982 letter of provenance from Gideon Welles' great-great-grandson, testifying that "It was given to Mary Jane Welles, the wife of Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy, by Mrs. Lincoln." This can be restored to look like new; however, family lore asserts that the breakage occurred when Mary Todd Lincoln threw the plate at the President. The "hellcat" had quite a temper and is known to have thrown a broom at her husband while they lived in Springfield. The plate is kept in a 19th century flannel pouch with grosgrain ribbon closure.Auction Info
