Description

Abraham Lincoln: A Superb, Beautifully-Engraved 14kt. Gold Presentation Pen. The engraved inscription: "To Hon. A. Lincoln by Jos. E. Stokes 1864." It is accompanied by a notarized 1972 affidavit from the nurse who attended Lincoln Isham, Abraham Lincoln's grandson, for 4½ years. She attests that the pen was passed down through the Lincoln family for many years, and that it was given to her by Isham.

This is a most unusual mechanical pen and pencil combination, marked "Mabies Patent Oct. 1854" and based on John Mabie's "Improved Pen and Pencil Case," U.S. Patent No. 11,762. A photocopy of the patent is included as is additional information about the manufacturer. It is in beautiful condition, missing the writing nib, and should be of great interest to pen collectors as well as lovers of Lincolniana. We have noted auction sales of similar writing instruments in the $2000-3000 price range without the Lincoln association. Length slightly over 5".

We have been unable to uncover any information on Stokes, but doubtless he was one of the many office-seekers or contractors who constantly curried favor from the president.
