Description
[Thomas Jefferson]: Personally-Owned Silhouette of Daughter Martha. 4.25" x 5.25" hollow-cut silhouette of Martha Jefferson Randolph (1772-1836) in circa 1960 frame. Martha was the eldest child of Thomas and Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson (d. 1782). She married a third cousin, Thomas Mann Randolph, at Monticello on February 23, 1790. She later served two brief stints as First Lady during the Jefferson Presidency. According to a notarized letter of provenance and family history signed by a recent owner, Camilla Hoes Pope (descendant of President James Monroe), this silhouette and one of Martha's daughter was kept by Jefferson in his writing or lap desk. Appears to have the original bubble glass eglomisé mat.Auction Info
