Description

[Abraham Lincoln]: Strip of Wallpaper from the Peterson House Death Room. 13" x 1 ½" strip of patterned wall paper removed from the room at the Peterson House in which President Lincoln died. Generally in excellent condition with four tears or creases reinforced on verso. Accompanied by the original transmittal enveloped inscribed: "2: 30 PM/ Oct 12. 1894/ Relic of Paper from Mrs. Col/ Olyrood [sic] cut from the wall/ in the room in which/ Pres Lincoln Died./ Mrs. Col. Olyrood [sic]." We cannot explain the reason for the misspelling in the Oldroyd name; however, Osborn Oldroyd did operate the Peterson House as a museum for a number of years, displaying his personal collection of Lincolniana. Besides the transmittal envelope, we include a 1964 letter from the Chief of the History Branch of the National Park Service, attesting to its authenticity. He states: "You may be assured that this is a true and accurate fragment of the wallpaper from this room. A number of years ago we had the wallpaper reproduced so that we could keep the same design on the wall. We have understood that the Oldroyds did dispose of a number of samples of this paper."
