Description

War of 1812: Anti-British Cartoon. 17 1/2" x 11 1/2" engraved cartoon titled "John Bull making a new Batch of Ships to send to the Lakes". Published in 1814 by William Charles, it celebrates the American naval victories of Perry and Macdonough which caused the loss of the British fleet on Lake Erie. Despite the misgivings of his French allies and financiers, as well as British arms makers, John Bull obliviously throws in more supplies, lest the Yankees take Canada next. OCLC locates only the AAS copy. The LC online catalog shows a color version, but makes note of a black & white version. Excellent condition.
