Description

Native American Party: 1845 Philadelphia Broadside. 13" x 21" broadside, titled "We Publish to the World, The Introduction of the Native American Party in 3rd Ward Kensington", issued by members of the Native American Party in 1845. It describes the April 1844 call for various meetings in the area and reports on disturbances and violence that coincided with their efforts. In particular, at one meeting "... a disturbance took place and fighting soon began, and fire arms were used by the foreigners. George Shiffler being killed and many others severely injured, the Natives were again for the third time driven from the ground, having made scarcely any resistance." In fact, the Native Americans were renown for various forms of mayhem and it seems their pleas of innocence were duplicitous. Pencil notation on verso: "April 22, 1844 (J. Forbus Wills)". A printed notarized statement dated June 1845 indicates this broadside was printed at that time and intended to dispel public outrage against the Natives. They supported Henry Clay in the election of 1844. We are also selling a wonderful Native American political flag that belonged to Clay. Normal folds, minor wear with some faint pink discoloration.
