Description

Martin Van Buren: Outstanding 1840 Campaign Poster. Before we get started, how many Van Buren posters have you ever seen? (don't everybody raise their hand at once!) This is a first for us. Now, for the particulars. 18 1/2" x 21 1/2" black & white lithograph published in 1840 by E. Littlefield of Boston, titled "Independent Treasury and Liberty. Martin Van Buren." The Little Magician is pictured front & center, flanked by two columns. Andrew Jackson stands on the left column, clutching a scroll inscribed "Veto U.S. Bank". A workman or mechanic stands on the other column holding an axe and a scroll that reads "Ten Hours". Embossed blind-stamp of retailer George C. Dempsey of Boston. A few minor edge tears, a 3" vertical tear at the top, but clean & bright with full margins. Exceptional.
