Description
Lincoln & Hamlin: Jugate Wide Awake Membership Certificate. 17" x 14" lithograph published in 1860 by Cavit & Company of New York. Portraits of Lincoln & Hamlin appear in the top corners, flanking mauls, split rails and an all-seeing eye. Wide Awake marchers stand to either side, both wearing eagle-adorned kepis. One holds a cane and captain's lantern, while the other holds a Pitkin double-swivel torch. A horde of marchers converge on the Capitol in the central portion. An eagle, shield, locomotive, mountain range, harbor, and Lincoln splitting rails appear below. It reads: "Free Speech, Free Soil, Free Men. This is to Certify that Chas. B. Johnson is a member of the East Hampton [Connecticut] Wide Awake Club. East Hampton Nov. 6th 1860." Interestingly, this corresponds to Election Day 1860. Moderate, even toning with four short repaired tears and chipping along top. Currently encapsulated. Despite club membership in the tens of thousands, we know of only one other example of this fabulous display piece. It should be the envy of any true-blue Lincoln fan.Auction Info
