Description
John F. Kennedy: "A Time for Greatness" Wisconsin Campaign Poster, Signed By JFK. Wisconsin played a pivotal role in John F. Kennedy's 1960 path to the presidency. During a Milwaukee speech that spring, Kennedy underscored the state's importance, calling the primary "so important" to the national nomination fight. He threw himself into an intensive retail campaign across the state - factory gates, diners, church basements, union halls, using Wisconsin as a proving ground to demonstrate broad appeal beyond the East Coast and reassure working-class and Catholic voters alike. This remarkable signed poster is known among the old guard in the American Political Items Collectors organization, also longtime Kennedy collectors. The late John Henigan of Racine, Wisconsin, former president of the Kennedy Political Items Collectors (KPIC) recorded that he acquired two signed "A Time for Greatness" carboard posters from Joe and Mrs. Kaisler, owners of Joe's Chef Grill in Racine, during a Kenosha APIC meeting on April 6, 1986.
According to Henigan, the Kaislers obtained the posters on March 19, 1960, when they attended John Kennedy's campaign stop in Racine. Campaign workers had distributed posters earlier in the day, and the couple brought two of them to the event. They told Kennedy they would display both in their restaurant windows if he would sign them. Kennedy obliged-inscribing one "Best Wishes, John Kennedy" and the other "Best Regards, John Kennedy."
The piece offered here is the sister poster to the well-known "Best Wishes, John Kennedy" example, the only other signed poster of this type, which remains closely held within a prominent and highly regarded vintage JFK collection. While this signature has not been formally authenticated by PSA and therefore lacks a PSA letter of authenticity, it has been affirmed as genuine by the nation's leading JFK autograph authority, who also serves as a PSA reviewer.
Additional corroboration comes from the union printer's bug in the upper right corner, identifying production of the poster by Amalgamated Lithographers of America, Local 15B (Milwaukee) for the Wisconsin Volunteers for Kennedy—precisely the regional printing used during Kennedy's 1960 Wisconsin primary push.
A superb, regionally issued campaign piece with rock-solid Wisconsin provenance and one of the few known signed examples of a John F. Kennedy campaign poster.
