Description
John C. Frémont: Iconic Cartoon. Small folio lithograph [14" x 10.75"] published by Burnham, Federhen & Company of Boston in 1856, titled "The Candidates. Young America and Old Fogyism. Look on this Picture and On This. Fremont and 'Our Jessie' [and] 'Old Buck'". The youthful "Pathfinder" stands alongside his popular bride holding a scroll reading "California A Free State". A scroll sitting on the floor in Buchanan's parlor reads "Ostend Conference. Pierre Soule. J. Buchan-eer." (an 1854 directive to purchase Cuba for the extension of slavery).
