Civil War: Three Examples Of Political Satire In Cartoons. Political cartoon satires were very popular during the Civil War. Three examples are offered in this lot, two of which have similar themes and both titled "Why Don't You Take It?". Featuring caricatures of Jefferson Davis, shown as a greyhound cowering away from General Ulysses S. Grant portrayed as an aggressive bulldog. Between them sits a piece of "Prize beef" labeled "Washington." They measure 11" x 17" and 13.5" x 17.25" respectively. A third and much more evocative cartoon portrays an African American dying from "Sesesh Fever". It is sized at 15" x 17.5".
