Description
Civil War: Three Cartoons Satirizing Confederate Recruitment Practices. This trio of prints pokes fun at the manner in which Southern soldiers are inducted into service. One example titled, "Volunteering Down Dixie" shows a reluctant recruit forcibly restrained and issued his equipment. Another titled, "Southern Volunteers" was likely issued after the Confederate Congress passed a national conscription act on April 16, 1862 to boost its shrinking numbers. It shows Southern soldiers bullying two apparently well-heeled gentlemen into service, one protests claiming to be a "Union man". A third example titled, "The Voluntary Manner In Which Some Of The Southern Volunteers Enlist." A very busy and facetious cartoon shows a 'volunteer' ushered into the recruitment office at bayonet point while a Confederate officer sits at a table supported by a whiskey barrel. A drunken civilian is passed out against a wall and has a small dog urinating on his shoe under a poster stating his property was confiscated by the Confederacy due to being a suspected Union sympathizer. A small figure of Abraham Lincoln hangs suspended next to a poster titled "Suicide of Abe Lincoln"and "Washington to be taken,". The print is loaded with other symbolic references to Southern claims of victory. Sizes average 12" x 16".Condition: Extra fine for each.
