Description
Andrew Jackson: "King Andrew the First" Political Cartoon. 11.125" x 14.5", circa 1834. Attributed to Edward Williams Clay. A scarce and iconic image created by the anti-Jacksonian opposition that emerged in the 1830s. Jackson is depicted in coronation robes and crown standing before a throne. He holds a scepter in his right hand, and a scroll marked "Veto" in his left; he stands treading over torn sheets labeled "Constitution of the United Stats of America," "Internal Improvements / U.S. Bank," and the Pennsylvania state seal, with a discarded book titled "Judiciary of the U. States" in the foreground.Jackson vetoed the renewal of the Second Bank of the United States' charter in July 1832 and began withdrawing the government's funds from the Bank in 1833. To further undermine the Bank, he transferred the responsibility for making pension payments to Revolutionary War veterans from the Bank to the War Department. This episode, which occurred in early 1834, caused friction when Nicholas Biddle, the Bank's president, refused to hand over the pensioners' documentation to the War Department, leading Jackson to temporarily suspend these payments to the veterans. Additionally, in 1832, Jackson defied Chief Justice John Marshall and the Supreme Court's ruling that declared the removal of the Cherokee from Georgia unconstitutional. These actions contributed to the formation of an organized opposition to Jackson's policies, culminating in the emergence of the Whig Party in 1834.
This image originates from an exceptionally rare broadside titled, "King Andrew the First" of which only two intact copies have appeared at auction in more than four decades; most recently selling for $21,250 in June 2022 at Heritage (lot 43033). That said, given the size of the borders, this may be a separately issued, standalone cartoon, rather than a cut-down version of the larger broadside. A desirable and iconic piece, in any event.
Condition: Scattered foxing, with areas of heavy soiling and offsetting at top and right margins (well away from image). Tiny tears along all edges. Two small tabs of cloth tape at top on verso. Creasing at lower right.
