Abraham Lincoln: John Wilkes Booth Assassination Broadside. For those interested in our 16th President, a "Booth Reward Broadside" constitutes a Holy Grail. Like the Charleston Mercury "The Union is Dissolved!" broadside and Ford's Theatre playbills, it is widely sought after. Lincoln's assassination prompted a series of law enforcement documents and notices. Initially, a small broadside was printed offering a $25,000 reward for the capture of Booth. The reward was then increased to an aggregate of $100,000 and a larger broadside disseminated that gave detailed, albeit not totally accurate physical descriptions of the conspirators, but no photographs. We are offering the third version which advises the public that Booth may have shaved off his moustache and added "frames" for photographs. A fourth version exists which has the three photographs attached. Eventually, President Johnson also authorized a reward for the capture of Jefferson Davis and a slew of Confederate agents who were suspected of fomenting the plot. A small reward broadside was issued for them, as well. In any event, all such original broadsides are rare and quite valuable. This prime example measures approximately 13" x 24" and has been professionally backed with rice paper to repair a few small tears. It is truly in great shape and a key relic of the Civil War and the "final chapter" in the saga of Abraham Lincoln.Auction Info
