Description
Abraham Lincoln: Anti-McClellan & Pendleton Broadside. 31" x 22 1/2" broadside addressed to "War Democrats", raising the specter of "Gentleman George" Pendleton becoming President should McClellan be elected and somehow succumb shortly thereafter. This was a similar argument used when Nixon selected Spiro T. Agnew as his running mate. "War Democrats" were people who normally supported Democratic candidates, but favored vigorous prosecution of the war and, in theory, would cross party lines and vote for Abraham Lincoln in the election of 1864. The implication of this broadside is that McClellan is a worthy candidate, but his candidacy is compromised by the inclusion of Pendleton. Great "broadside style" with different fonts on each line. Excellent condition. Possibly the only copy extant.Auction Info
