Description

Abraham Lincoln: 1863 Draft Broadside. 17 1/2" x 23" graphic broadside dated July 10, 1863 announcing a draft of 45 men from Ashland, Massachusetts. The title reads: "By Order of Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States... A Draft will be made by the Board of Enrolment." The names of those selected would be announced at the Court House in Concord at 10 A.M. on the day selected. When voluntary enlistment and recruitment efforts failed to meet the needs of the army, a draft was instituted. This measure proved quite controversial, especially in New York City where it provoked the infamous Draft Riots of July 1863. Despite the Union victory at Gettysburg the week before, efforts were intensified to fill the depleted ranks of the military. Not examined out of frame, but appears to be in excellent condition.
