Description
[John C. Frémont]: Rare and Outstanding Anti-Slavery Cartoon. 17" x 14" lithographed cartoon. It dates from the election of 1856 and deals with the issues of the Kansas Nebraska Territory, Free Soil and the events that would eventually lead to the Civil War. It is titled "A Pro Slavery Incantation Scene or Shakespeare Improved, See Macbeth". Buchanan (holding the Ostend Manifesto) and Stephen Douglas (in the guise of a slave dealer) direct the actions of a group of men (Lewis Cass, Preston Brooks of South Carolina and others) preparing a witches' brew. The cauldron reads: "Double, double, Free State trouble/ Till Fremont men are straw and stubble." Douglas says: "Pour in streams of Free mens blood/ Then the charm is firm and good/ To see the blood of Freemen spill/ To hear the widows cries so shrill/ To know my Kansas-Nebraska bill/ Has caus'd these woes, to me is joy/ Here and at home in Illinois." It was drawn by David Claypoole Johnston. Partial mounting hinges on verso.Auction Info
