Description
[George Washington] Important Anti-Thomas Jefferson 1793 Cartoon, Marking the Nascent Two-Party System. Titled "A Peep into the Antifederal Club," the cartoon depicts antifederalists as a motley group, ranging from childish and naïve to gluttonous drunkards. The character standing above the crowd and quoting Shakespeare is Thomas Jefferson, while a caricature of the devil lounges happily at the bottom left corner by the box of "Sacred records." David Rittenhouse also appears. The bottom right corner reads, "New York Aug 16 1793," and a banner at the upper left corner lists unflattering ideals of the anti-Federalists. Measuring at 18.5" x 13", the piece is a nice size. Some light toning is present and the edges are uneven with the left, top, and bottom exhibiting small tears. Some minor staining is barely visible at the bottom and top edges. At the back of the piece, tape is present along the top edge, and pieces of foreign paper have been affixed to the bottom right corner and center of the bottom edge, possibly to reinforce areas with tearing. Overall, this piece is full of character and would display very well. Thomas Jefferson and James Madison are credited with forming the first opposition party, the Democratic Republicans or anti-Federalists, in 1791. Various partisan cartoons of an uncomplimentary nature appeared in this early period, all of which are prohibitively rare. George Washington was outraged when he saw one cartoon that depicted him in a very negative and disrespectful light. We believe this is the only copy in private hands. No minimum bid.
