Description

[Civil War Era] "Tingley's Light Battery!" Pennsylvania Recruitment Broadside. Measuring at 19" x 24", this piece boldly advertises a meeting for "Tingley's Light Battery!" to be held on "Friday Evening, August 15, 1862, at the House of A. Walton, Seven Stars Hotel, to Aid in Recruiting the Above Battery." Poised for action, an illustration of an eagle outstretches its wings and clutches a banner in its beak reading "Enlist!" and "Avoid Drafting!" The bottom of the broadside promises addresses from multiple officers, including but not limited to Col. John W. Forney, Col. T.W. Duffield, Captain Tingley, and more. A period inscription can be seen at the right edge where the name and address of the recruiting office and officer are referenced. A finger pointing to the right appears to be at the left edge beside the eagle. Though Clement Tingley, Jr. was a first lieutenant, enlisting in August 1861 in Knap's Light Battery (Independent Battery E, PA Light Artillery), he resigned in May of 1862. There is no record of this unit ever forming (at least under the name of Tingley's Light Battery). Expected aging and toning are present. Professionally backed with heavy linen for preservation, there is minor scattered loss throughout with worn creases.
