Description
Prohibition: Large and Graphic 18th Amendment Broadside. 25" x 38", printed by Buck Printing Co., Boston. A large and visually powerful broadside urging Massachusetts citizens to press their legislators to ratify the Eighteenth Amendment establishing national Prohibition. Issued by the Council for National Prohibition shortly after Congress submitted the amendment to the states in December 1917, the poster implores: "THE U.S. CONGRESS HAS DONE ITS PART... HELP MASSACHUSETTS DO HER PART... HAVE YOU DONE YOUR PART?"The appeal reflects the heated campaigns waged across the country by temperance advocates to secure the necessary state ratifications. In Massachusetts, however, strong opposition from the brewing industry, labor organizations, and urban voters led the state legislature to reject the amendment in 1918—one of only two New England states to do so.
This broadside, distributed from the Council's Boston headquarters under Executive Secretary Arthur J. Davis, captures the urgency and moral fervor of the Prohibition movement at its peak.
Condition: Several fold lines but overall bright and vivid colors, in exceptional condition.
