Description

Debs & Hanford: 1904 Official Socialist Party Jugate Poster. We're tempted to catalog this piece of graphic art with a single word, gorgeous, and leave it at that, but it deserves so much more. While it is unquestionably the best third party poster, it may be the best political poster of the Golden Age of Politicals (1896-1908). It is certainly one of the rarest with less than five examples extant. The design was used on the ubiquitous worker's jugate from 1904. It measures 32" x 22" and is mounted on linen. It was copyrighted by "William Mailly, Sec'y" and printed by the Eagle Lithographing Company of Chicago. It has large full color portraits of Debs & Hanford, the two symbols of the Socialist Party, a locomotive, steamship, mining scene, harvesting scene, a print shop with linotype operator, glass and shoe factories at full tilt, and two workers depositing their ballots in a ballot box inscribed "Workers of All Countries Unite". We note two closed tears in the bottom border and lower right corner (both extending into the plate), some restoration to the upper left and bottom right border area and minor restoration to the extreme upper left corner, as well as a 3/4" ink mark near the Socialist logo on the left. All in all, the quality of the restoration work, though limited, is outstanding. The poster displays in near-mint condition. This is the first public offering we can recall in fifty years of collecting. It would be the highlight of any Debs display or collection!
