Description

Woodrow Wilson: Highly Important Anti-Lynching Slogan Button. 7/8" pinback, printed in red & blue, inscribed "I Stand With President Wilson Against Lynching". It has a very small crease or imperfection [2 mm across] at 3 o'clock, of no import, mentioned for accuracy only. It is a clean example, well-centered with strong color. Our research has disclosed but three known examples, one of which appears to be a variant. One of these resides in the distinguished collection of former APIC president Robert Fratkin, who deemed it one of the very few pre-1940 word buttons worthy of inclusion. One is pictured in the 1972 compendium "Hail to the Chief". It was issued in the wake of President Wilson's anti-lynching proclamation of July 26, 1918. Wilson criticized mob rule which cast the U.S. in an unfavorable light in its struggle with anti-democratic Germany. He urged U.S. citizens to respect institutions entrusted with maintaining order and justice while, at the same time, calling upon local police to prevent lawlessness. Despite the high-toned approach of the proclamation, the President did not call for any Federal legislation to curb the practice which, tragically, continued unabated for decades. Without question, the top Wilson slogan pin and one of the top name pins in the hobby, of great interest to political and social cause collectors alike. The most exceptional political slogan buttons have often soared to remarkable heights at auction. Some years ago Heritage offered a button which declared Al Smith makes your wet dreams come true", and it sold for nearly $10,000. A Tom Dewey for district attorney pin brought some $6,000, and the iconic "Eddie's Friend" oval Truman button has topped $10,000 on multiple occasions. Surely this very special Wilson button deserves inclusion in such company.
