Description

Woman's Suffrage: Choice Elizabeth Cady Stanton 1815-1915 Centennial Pinback Button. 1¼", with a Women's Political Union, New York backmark. This very rare pinback button depicting Elizabeth Cady Stanton on the one hundredth anniversary of her birth, was issued by her daughter, Harriet Stanton Blatch, through her suffrage organization, the Women's Political Union, for the November 2, 1915 New York State Suffrage Referendum. In bright, vibrant colors, this is the finest example of this famous pin that we have seen. Stanton, like her counterpart, Susan B. Anthony, tried to avoid being canonized by the suffrage movement, lest the campaign for women's rights be reduced to a cult of personality. She died in 1902, however, and she had no control thereafter on the use of her image. This pin has always been regarded as one of the keys to any suffrage collection, and it always commands high prices whenever it makes a rare appearance. This beautiful button is in pristine condition.
