Description

William Jennings Bryan and William McKinley: Pro and Anti Expansion Buttons. Even before the election of 1900, it was assumed that a "re-match" would occur between McKinley and Bryan. The bi-metallism and 16-to-1 issue had lost steam among the electorate, and the Battle of 1900 would be waged on the issue of imperialism, as well as the stand-by domestic issue of economic prosperity. These 1 1/2" buttons with filled backs show McKinley ("Pro-Expansion") and Bryan ("Anti-Expansion"), surrounded by scantily-clad female goddesses and Latin slogans. They were obviously targeted towards a well-educated voter pool, fluent in Latin. The Bryan button was made by Uhl Brothers of Toledo and the McKinley by Baltimore Badge. These are mint, and hard to find so. They are also the more desirable 1 1/2" size, in contrast to a 1" version that was produced. No translation provided ("mea culpa").
