Description

William Howard Taft: Very Unusual 1909 Pinback Button. 2 1/8", ribbons 3". St. Louis Button Company backmark. A rare souvenir of Howard Taft's October 26, 1909 visit to Cape Girardeau as part of a 16 boat flotilla that included cabinet members, senators, congressmen, and governors with the purpose of promoting the deepening and stabilization of the Mississippi River channel. This button features a central motif of a paddlewheel steamboat surrounded by oak leaves and surmounted by an eagle. The caption reads "Welcome to Our President" and "Cape Girardeau, Mo. 1909". The ribbon has worn slightly affecting some of the gilt lettering; otherwise it is in excellent condition.
