Description

Theodore Roosevelt: Booker T. Washington Equality Button. 1 1/4" very rare variant among the few known designs commemorating the historic, and controversial 1901 White House luncheon between President Theodore Roosevelt and Booker T. Washington. The meeting marked the first time an African American was invited to dine as a guest at the White House, a gesture intended by Roosevelt as a recognition of Washington's leadership and influence. While applauded at first by many progressives, the invitation provoked a storm of racist backlash, particularly in the South, and Roosevelt later avoided repeating such public gestures.

Condition: Only the slightest surface wear, one would be hard-pressed to find a better example.
