Description
Roosevelt & Fairbanks: Wonderful "Roos-e-Field" Jugate. There are several buttons that utilize the first syllable of TR's last name, "Rose", and incorporate it into a rebus design. No doubt inspired by that, an enterprising supporter of Roosevelt decided to produce a button that featured rebus designs for both TR and his running mate, Charles W. Fairbanks. While the standard "Rose-velt" rebus buttons are plentiful and modestly valued, not so in the case of the jugate design, of which perhaps five examples are known. We don't believe more than a single example has ever appeared at auction... this is our first opportunity to offer one. It is among a handful of "Holy Grail" TR buttons which, once acquired by the new owner, is likely not to see the light of day for a long, long time. We are aware of a private sale in the early 90s to an old-time dealer-collector for $23,000.The button measures 1 3/4" in diameter and has a full metal back. The credit on the curl reads: "Pat. Applied H. M. Canon Pueblo Litho Makers". It features full color portraits of the 1904 Republicans beneath an eagle holding a riband in its beak reading "The Short and Long of It". It is inscribed "Our Next Presidents 1904" above vignettes showing "Roos-e-Field" and "Fair-Banks".
Condition: Perfectly centered with strong colors. Normal surface wear with some very light foxing around the edge. Two short, shallow indentations on the eagle, mentioned for strictest accuracy, visible only at an angle. Overall, a very fine specimen with great visual appeal which is destined to hold a place of honor in the new owner's collection.
