Description

Harry S. Truman: The Key "60 Million People Working" Button Rarity.

Truman campaign material generally ranges from scarce to rare. One theory is that he looked to be such a sure loser that there were limited funds available for such niceties as campaign novelties. In any event, Truman's pinbacks are among the most coveted of all candidates and we offer here what is undoubtedly the most sought-after and valued of the lot, with at most ten examples known in collections. The last example handled by Heritage fetched $19,717 in our August 2008 auction. The button offered here does have a couple of minor condition issues which must be addressed, but as the photo shows, it displays very nicely. There is a little light rim foxing from 9:00 - 11:00, not visible from the front except for a bit which can barely be seen on the edge at 11:00. On Truman's right eye is a manufacturing defect unlike anything we have ever encountered: A small amount of some chemical with a grayish, metallic surface appears to have been dropped on the button paper prior to the celluloid covering being applied. Coincidentally, this deposit almost precisely covers Truman's eye, which would have been in shadow anyway. Accordingly, unless one views this from just the right angle, it is almost unnoticeable. Overall, this 2 ¼" rarity presents very nicely, and may represent a significant savings for a budget-minded collector.
